Programme note

Makietie was composed in London in 1978.

The title is ZULU in origin whereas the tonal materials on which the work is based, are “borrowed” from the Xhosa song: UQONGQOTHWANE.

By means of theme and variations, I intended to capture an “African spirit” rather than to paraphrase the indigenous music of certain people specifically.

The incorporation of an indigenous element into the music is handled with particular taste and skill - Roosenschoon writes exceptionally well for instruments and has a particular flair for exotic colouring.
